We have built a diabetic alert program guided by the National Institute of Canine Services & Training, who pioneered the training of Diabetic Alert dogs.
We need samples to train our dogs reliably to help those with Type 1 Diabetes
Targets - Diabetic Alert Samples are an important part of the puzzle
It’s not as scary as it sounds…
PROCESS
Contact is made and an IAAD representative will deliver a Sample Kit to the person providing samples.
When a person with T1D has a low blood sugar event (under 3.9 mmol/L) as indicated by dexcom or other similar medical devices;
A swab is taken of the skin at the small of their back - Rubbing a piece of gauze over the area,
The gauze is put into the supplied jar and jar closed
A finger poke and measurement is required to confirm the exact blood sugar level
The jar is labelled with the date and ‘finger poke’ blood sugar level.
The jar is put into the FREEZER, where it will stay until pick up.
A candy or sweet treat is consumed
Contact an IAAD team member for pick up and delivery of new sample kit.

Please contact us for any further questions - info@iaad.ca, heatherk@iaad.ca or samwt@iaad.ca
You are an integral part of our Diabetic Alert Program. Without you, we wouldn’t have the samples we need to be able to train our pups to identify low blood sugars before your medical devices alert you.
This is a commitment that can take a small amount of your time, providing significant impact.
Thank you….
