IAAD’s Nori - The New CBSA Detection Dog
Nori made it through the CBSA detection dog training and is officially ‘on duty’ with Border Patrol’!
As we go through with the process of training our puppies - through Early Puppy Education where we teach them their manners and help bring out their little personalities. Through Foundational Training, where they are taught the skillset they’ll need to grow into assistance dogs. Through Advanced Training, where they learn the skills that they’ll need to be a life changing assistance dog.. The volunteers have hopes, aspirations and yes, a little bit of pressure to get them through the finish line and to their their Client.
Placement is often the goal, but it’s not always the path that the pup chooses.
We’ve said it before, that the puppy chooses its path and we work with them to help them, where they are at, move towards their next adventure.
As all puppies are so different, with unique characteristics and strengths, it’s important that we have many different pathways for them to walk down. IAAD partnered with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) through brining our more agile, driven dogs; the ones that are ‘a LOT of dog’, to the CBSA for testing. The trainers there assess the pup to determine if it’s a good fit. When there’s a fit, the pup goes on a journey to Eastern Canada where they’re placed in a training program for Detection. Detection of what you may ask - so many to choose from; guns, drugs, agriculture (food) to name a few. It’s a program that lasts months, and at the end of it all, they are tested for success. Can they find what they’re looking for?
Well, little Nori; one of the founding IAAD pups that helped launch our program, found her success!!
She is now a Detection Dog with the CBSA, working with her partner to keep the Border and Canadians within safe!
